歴史的に、熱ショック応答とはHSFによる熱ショックタンパク質の誘導とされてきた。本シリーズでは、熱ショック応答を再考し、新しいパラダイムを提案している。つまり、「熱ショック応答とは、ストレス下ならびに非ストレス下におけるHSF群による遺伝子発現の変化である」。それにより、タンパク質毒性の軽減、寿命の伸長、個体発生等の様々な生命現象に重要な役割を持つことを詳細に解説している。
